What Happened to 12-Year-Old Steven Earl Kraft Jr.? The Unsolved Michigan Disappearance That Still Haunts Families 25 Years Later

Steven Earl Kraft Jr. walked out of his house one cold February evening in 2001 to play with the family dogs. He never came back for dinner. More than 25 years have passed, and this Michigan missing child case remains unsolved. Today, Steven would be 37 years old.

This is the story of a normal boy from a quiet neighborhood who vanished without a trace. His case still raises questions and shows why some disappearances stay in our minds for decades.

Who Was Steven Earl Kraft Jr.?

Steven, often called Stevie by family and friends, was born on January 11, 1989, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the time he went missing, he lived with his family in the Benton Heights neighborhood of Benton Township, near Benton Harbor, Michigan.

He was a typical 12-year-old boy — independent, social, and a bit rough-and-tumble. He liked playing outside and had just finished a five-day suspension from Hull Elementary School after getting into a fight where he defended himself.

Physical description at the time of disappearance:

  • Age: 12 years old
  • Height: 5 feet 2 inches
  • Weight: 100 pounds
  • Hair: Sandy brown (light brown)
  • Eyes: Green
  • Race: White
  • Other detail: Small red birthmark on the left side of his torso

Steven had family ties to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Lexington, Kentucky.

The Evening He Disappeared – February 15, 2001

It was a Thursday night. Steven left his home in the 2100 block of Holly Drive around 7 p.m. His mom was cooking dinner, and he told her he was going outside with the two family dogs. He promised he would be back soon.

He was last seen between 7 and 8 p.m. When he did not return, his parents became worried. They searched the neighborhood and called the police around 1 a.m.

The two dogs eventually returned home, but Steven did not. One dog came back on its own. The other was found wandering several blocks away, near Blue Creek.

Steven was wearing:

  • A blue-green (aqua and purple) Charlotte Hornets basketball team jacket
  • A tan and white striped t-shirt
  • Tan parachute pants
  • Black boots (often described as black Lugz boots)

The Search and What Investigators Found

Police and volunteers started searching immediately. They discovered footprints in the snow from Steven’s black boots, along with the dogs’ paw prints. The tracks led toward an icy pond near Harbor Haven Ministries on Irving Street, only a block or two from his house. Then the footprints stopped.

Dive teams checked the pond and nearby waters. Searches covered creeks, small lakes, wooded areas, and the whole neighborhood. No clothing, personal items, or other clues belonging to Steven were ever found.

The neighborhood has changed a lot since 2001. Some houses, including the one Steven grew up in, were torn down. Part of the area now has an airport. But the questions about that night remain the same.

Why This Case Remains Unsolved After 25+ Years

Steven’s case is still classified as an endangered missing child investigation. The Benton Township Police Department and the FBI continue to treat it as active.

No one saw a struggle. There were no clear signs of abduction or an accident. The dogs came back, but Steven simply disappeared.

Both of Steven’s parents sadly passed away after the 20-year mark without ever learning what happened to their son.

Age-progressed photos from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) show what Steven might look like today at age 37. These images are regularly updated and shared by the FBI to help the public recognize him if he is still alive.
