Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Who Terrorized California in the 1980s
Richard Ramirez, also known as “The Night Stalker,” was a serial killer, rapist, and burglar who terrorized Southern California from 1984 to 1985. His crimes were so brutal and random that they struck fear into an entire region.
Between June 1984 and August 1985, Ramirez murdered at least 13 people, sexually assaulted many others, and committed a series of horrific home invasions. His violence was driven by a deep obsession with Satanism, and he often left satanic symbols at crime scenes.
Early Life: A Childhood of Trauma
Born February 29, 1960, in El Paso, Texas, Richard Ramirez had a deeply troubled upbringing:
- He suffered repeated head injuries as a child.
- Grew up around violence and drug use.
- Was influenced by his older cousin Mike, a Vietnam veteran who showed him graphic photos of war crimes and even murdered his wife in front of Richard.
As a teenager, Ramirez became addicted to drugs and turned to burglary. By his early 20s, he had moved to California, where his killing spree began.
The Crimes: Terror by Night
Ramirez would enter homes at night—unlocked windows and doors were his entry points. His victims included men, women, and even children, and he had no consistent victim profile.
His attacks included:
- Brutal stabbings and shootings
- Sexual assault, including on children
- Satanic rituals, like drawing pentagrams in blood
- Robbery and torture
He often forced his victims to “swear to Satan” and showed no remorse. His randomness made him almost impossible to track—young or old, rich or poor, no one was safe.
Public Panic & Media Frenzy
By mid-1985, Los Angeles was in a state of pure panic. People:
- Bought extra locks and guns
- Slept with lights on
- Were terrified to sleep at night
The media dubbed him “The Night Stalker” because of his midnight attacks.
Capture: Caught by the Public
In August 1985, Ramirez was finally identified thanks to a fingerprint found in a stolen car. A mugshot from a prior arrest was released to the public.
Days later, in East L.A., locals recognized and chased him down when he tried to carjack someone. The community beat him until police arrived.
Trial & Conviction
His trial was one of the most expensive and sensational of the time. It lasted over four years. He smiled in court, showed no remorse, and even said:
“Hail Satan!“
“I am beyond good and evil. I will be avenged.”
Convicted of:
- 13 murders

- 11 sexual assaults
- 14 burglaries
- Jennie Vincow, 79: Murdered on June 28, 1984, in Glassell Park, Los Angeles. She was repeatedly stabbed, and her throat was nearly decapitated. Ramirez’s fingerprint was found at the scene. This murder established his pattern of viciousness and burglary.

Lang died in August from her injuries.
