Richard Montanez was born in Ontario, California, to a Mexican American family. He grew up with nine siblings in a migrant labor camp near Los Angeles. He belonged to a very poor family. Richard Montanez mother name is not known, but his father, Luciano “Lucky” Montanez, worked as a car mechanic.

Instead of finishing school, he started working as a laborer. At age 18, he got a job as a janitor at the Frito-Lay factory in Rancho Cucamonga in 1976. Over time, he worked hard and was promoted to different positions, eventually becoming a senior machinist operator. 

Claim of Inventing Flamin’ Hot Cheetos 

Richard Montanez claims to have invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos by seasoning unflavored snacks with spices similar to Mexican street corn when a Cheetos machine broke down. He explained the idea to CEO Roger Enrico, resulting in a trial introduction in the Los Angeles test market in 1992, followed by a nationwide rollout.

However, a Los Angeles Times article disputed his claim, stating that an internal investigation at Frito-Lay found no evidence of his involvement in creating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from a former employee, and it was revealed that other individuals were influential in the development of spicy snacks at Frito-Lay.

Career After Frito-Lay 

Despite the controversy, Montanez continued to give keynote speeches based on his Flamin’ Hot Cheetos claim. His last position was vice president of multicultural sales and community promotions for PepsiCo North America, from which he retired in March 2019 during the internal investigation. He is also the author of two books based on his life experiences and is the subject of a biopic directed by Eva Longoria.
