Missing Plane and Human Remains Found in Lake Huron: In August 2007, a small plane carrying pilot Karen Dodds and her fiancé H. Brooke Stauffer disappeared after taking off from Mackinac Island on its way to Bad Axe.

The plane was later found to have crashed into lake Huron. Karen Dodds body was recovered a few months later, but Stauffer’s remains and the wreckage were never found.

In 2023, the families asked Great Lakes Search and Recovery to help locate the H. Brooke Stauffer.

After overcoming challenges from changing water conditions and ice, the team found the wreckage near Bois Blanc Island in August 2024.

In August 2007, 56-year-old H. Brooke Stauffer Jr. and his fiancée, 52-year-old Karen Dodds, took off from Mackinac Island, hoping to reach Bad Axe, Michigan.

They were flying in a SOCATA TB-20 Trinidad, a small aircraft piloted by Karen Dodds.

Despite clear weather, the plane never made it to its destination, crashing into Lake Huron under circumstances that remain unknown to this day. 

A witness reported hearing the plane crash into the lake, sparking a swift search effort. Two months later, the remains of Karen Dodds were recovered from the Straits of Mackinac.

However, the wreckage of the plane and the remains of Brooke Stauffer Jr. were never found—until now. 

For many years, the case went cold, leaving the victims’ families without answers.

In October 2023, driven by a need for closure, the families reached out to Great Lakes Search and Recovery, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding missing persons in the Great Lakes.

The group, led by founder Jim Scholz, took on the challenge, spurred by Scholz’s own memories of the crash from when it first occurred. 

The team began by reviewing all existing data and carefully mapping out areas previously searched by the Michigan State Police and the Civil Air Patrol.

They also used a new drift study to estimate where the wreckage might have ended up after 17 years of shifting lake currents, weather changes, and ice buildup.

The Breakthrough Discovery 

After months of meticulous planning, the search team set out near Bois Blanc Island in August 2024. On just the second day of their mission, they detected an unusual object on their sonar equipment.

It wasn’t a rock or a submerged log—it was something much more significant. As they circled back, it became evident that they had located the plane. 

The discovery was immediately reported to the Michigan State Police, who sent divers to explore the crash site. The divers recovered skeletal remains, which were then sent to Northern Michigan University’s Center for Forensic Anthropology.

Through dental records, the remains were confirmed to be those of H. Brooke Stauffer Jr., finally bringing some measure of peace to his grieving family.

Brooke Stauffer Jr. was a distinguished professional, serving as the director of standards and safety for the National Electrical Contractors Association.

He was also a prolific author of technical books, magazine articles, a children’s novel, and a guidebook for Washington, D.C.

His fiancée, Karen Dodds, was an entrepreneur who ran a successful graphic web design and marketing firm in Washington, D.C.

Their tragic loss is a poignant reminder of the importance of perseverance in the face of uncertainty and the deep human need for closure. 

A Mix of Art and Science 

Jim Scholz, who led the search, described the operation as a blend of art and science, where data analysis met human intuition about where to look and when.

Thanks to the relentless efforts of his team and advances in search technology, a mystery that haunted two families for nearly two decades was finally put to rest. 

What’s Next? 

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) initially investigated the crash but was unable to determine a definitive cause. It remains to be seen whether the recent discovery of the wreckage will prompt a reopening of the investigation.

For now, the recovery of the wreckage and the remains stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit and the relentless pursuit of answers, no matter how long it takes.
