The incident occurred when her Tesla backed into a pond on a property near Johnson City, close to Austin. Despite efforts from friends and deputies to rescue her, Angela Chao was unable to escape the sinking car and was pronounced dead the next day.

The investigation by the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office concluded that Angela Chao death was an “unfortunate accident.”

This conclusion was reached after a gathering with friends turned into a night of tragedy.

Angela Chao friend, Amber Keinan, received a heartbreaking call from her at 11:42 p.m., informing them of her dire situation. Over the course of eight agonizing minutes, as the car continued to sink, Angela tearfully expressed her fear and realization that she might not survive.

Witnesses to the accident immediately dialed 911 and rushed to assist Angela. Blanco County emergency personnel arrived at the scene around midnight and attempted to reach her submerged car. Despite their efforts, the situation remained dire.

A brave deputy broke the driver door window and plunged underwater to search for Angela.

After locating her, he managed to pull her to shore. However, despite the best efforts of EMS workers, Angela could not be revived. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. on February 11.

The toxicology report revealed that Angela Chao blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit in Texas.

This discovery added a somber tone to the already tragic events of that night. Angela Chao role as a beloved sister and influential businesswoman, as well as her connections to prominent figures like Mitch McConnell, made her passing deeply impactful.

She went to Harvard University, where she finished her bachelor’s degree in economics in only three years and graduated with top honors.

Later, she pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School, which prepared her well for her future career in the business world.

Beyond her corporate achievements, Angela was actively involved in various organizations and initiatives.

She served on the board of the Bank of China and held positions in influential entities such as the Council of China’s Foreign Trade and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Additionally, Angela was a founding member of the Asian American Foundation, reflecting her commitment to community engagement and philanthropy.

In her personal life, Angela Chao experienced both joy and heartache. She got married to Bruce Wasserstein in 2009, but he sadly passed away that same year.

However, Angela Chao found love again and married Jim Breyer in 2012. They had a son together and decided to live in Austin, Texas, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
