Abraham Lincoln (1865)
The first recorded assassination of an American president occurred on April 14, 1865, when 16th President Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., while watching a play.
Abraham Lincoln, with his wife Mary and guests Major Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris, was watching a play at Ford’s Theatre when John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, entered their box from behind.
Booth fired a.44-caliber Derringer pistol at the back of Lincoln’s head, fatally injuring him. Rathbone attempted to stop Booth but was stabbed in the struggle, allowing Booth to escape.
Lincoln, unconscious, was quickly attended to by doctors and transported to the nearby Petersen House. Despite efforts to save him, Lincoln remained in a coma for nine hours before passing away at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865.
His death marked a tragic moment in American history, leading to a widespread manhunt for Booth and the execution of others involved in the conspiracy.
James Garfield (1881)
James Garfield, who served as the 20th President of the United States, had one of the shortest terms in office. He became president in March 1881 and was assassinated at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881.
Charles J. Guiteau, a writer and lawyer, shot Garfield twice with a.442 Webley British Bull Dog revolver as Garfield arrived at the station.
Despite enduring eleven weeks of suffering, Garfield died on September 19, 1881. Guiteau was swiftly arrested, convicted after a highly publicized trial, and executed by hanging on June 30, 1882, in the District of Columbia.
