Founded in 1946 by Karl and Theo Albrecht in Essen, Germany, Aldi split into two separate entities in 1960, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

Although legally independent, they sometimes appear linked in branding or negotiations.

Aldi Nord operates in Germany and several European countries and owns Trader Joe’s in the US.

Aldi Süd, active in Australia, Europe, and the US, owns Winn-Dixie and Harveys. Aldi competes with Lidl, another German discount chain.
